About Susan Darwin

Susan Darwin paints from a studio in Millburn, N.J. She has also painted from a studio in Irvington, N.Y., and a shed in Shaw's Cove Fairhaven, Mass. Born in New York City, Susan was raised in Fairhaven, where she loved nature and animals and dreamed of being a veterinarian. At Regis College in Weston, Mass., she took her first art class as a reprieve from a demanding pre-med course load. She immediately felt inspired and rediscovered the joy of creating. Her BA in Graphic Art helped her find fulfilling publishing work in NYC. After her two children were born, she felt the need to return to painting, and—due to the schedule of raising little ones—she learned to paint fast during naps. This led to a process of intense, short bursts of work that captured the essence of things: A series of fish. A series of quahogs. A series of distant horizons. A series of branches. Exploring life, gesture and meaning. The children are now grown; she lives in Millburn, N.J., with her husband, John Loddo, and although she works nine-to-five in NYC (at educational publishing software company Pubbly), she still churns out paintings.
